Hey, y’all!
Welcome to my newsletter! As many of you know, Kyle and I brought home a beautiful little fox large puppy on August 6.
We named her Sylvie because we love trees and, if all goes according to plan, she will reign as queen over the forest behind our house for the next 12-15 years.
Speaking of queens, we thought we were bringing home a dog with a young Queen Elizabeth energy (RIP, btw) – young adult, solid manners, still has a lot to learn but is stoic and up to the task. Think Clair Foy’s Queen Elizabeth in The Crown.
But you know how sometimes a monarch dies unexpectedly and the new king or queen ascends to the throne when they’re, like, six years old? That’s more the situation in our household these days. We planned for a 2- or 3-year-old dog and ended up with a 4-month-old puppy (more on that switcheroo in the next newsletter). And now, rather than the serene experience of daily hikes and sweet snuggles we’d imagined, we’re playing the role of Sylvie’s regents, chasing our child queen (complete with claws and fangs) from room to room, making sure she doesn’t turn into a King Joffrey-type royal and destroy the kingdom with any number of rash, selfish, food-motivated decisions.
This newsletter is my attempt to make sense and make light of the situation we’ve found ourselves in, as well as create a legitimate excuse to share an otherwise unacceptable number of Sylvie photos when I can get her to sit still and stop chewing her leash long enough. You can expect stories about her crazy antics during the rough weeks, sentimental gushing during the good weeks, and given how much time I have on my hands these days, probably some philosophical musings about what it means to love a dog even when she’s driving you absolutely insane.
All hail Queen Sylvie! Long may she reign.

Welcome to the family, HRH Sophie! You should be warned that some other members of the family are...wait for it...gasp...FELINES!!! Heaven forbid we put you and cousins Felix and Leonardo in the same room together; disaster would ensue. Felix and Nardo are exquisitely beautiful, yet gregarious, red tabbies.
Love, love, love! Sylvie is such a cutie. Can't wait to make our way out to Pittsburgh sometime soon. Hope the move went smoothly for y'all! 💛
Also, what a great idea to use substack!
